The 13 nicest bars and restaurants during EXPO REAL in Munich

The EXPO REAL team discloses its insider tips

The Munich culinary scene offers a broad range of restaurants and caters for all tastes. We tell you about the nicest, tastiest and most unusual places to end the day, so that you will not have to use the room service or the hotel bar at your accommodation or order a pizza. Have fun trying them out!

Spezlwirtschaft

Traditional Bavarian fare – in a new and artful interpretation: The “Spezlwirtschaft” in the city center with its plain rustic ambience offers much of a casual pub atmosphere and a pleasant atmosphere to slow down in a building dating back to 1264. On the menu you will find hearty down-to-earth food made of high-quality ingredients, such as spinach dumplings and cheese pasta, but also a vegan kohlrabi fritter, surf & turf or entrecôte medium rare with home-made fries. Enjoy!

Tip: Surf & turf and “Heiland Spritz” (“Heiland” is a bitter liqueur right from Munich).

Swagat

If you love Indian food, you will get your money’s worth. The “Swagat” offers a great variety of specialty foods from all over India – prepared with fresh ingredients and carefully matched exotic spices: curries, tandooris out of the clay oven and thalis. And even vegetarians won’t miss out on anything. The cozy basement restaurant offers just the right ambience to chill out after a long day at work.

Tip: Thalis – platters with several dishes to try for one or two people.

Holy Burger

The “Holy Burger” is for everyone who likes it simple. The interior is simple, but trendy, the menu, however, offers a large choice of burgers made of pure organic ground meat with all the trimmings. You can enjoy the “Holy Bolt” with a fried egg, avocado, organic bacon and home-made tomato relish – or the “Holy Trüffel” with brie and home-made red-wine shallots with truffles. All burgers are served medium rare, but also well-done, if you prefer.

Tip: Order the sweet chilli cheese fries with your burger. The extra calories are well worth it.

The High

This bar relies on a clear line: The ambience of “The High” is modern urban, but unpretentious, so that the illuminated bar with its ample supplies is brought to bear. It is an eyecatcher and the centerpiece at the same time and offers highballs as a particular specialty of the house. Highballs are prettily decorated long drinks with partly surprising ingredients. Thus, “Bowie” is a drink consisting of rum, apricot, oat milk, lime and chocolate.

Tip: Don’t miss out on trying one of the bar’s own fancy highball creations – the so-called “Homeballs”!

The exterior of “Schwabinger Wassermann” is like that of a traditional Bavarian restaurant. This style has also been picked up in the interior and turned into a cozy modern atmosphere. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails: “Schwabinger Wassermann” will look after you all day long. The menu includes a colorful mix of traditional and exotic dishes, such as Bavarian roast pork with crackling, truffled Italian risotto or Asian tom kha gai soup.

Tip: Breakfast (available until 4 p.m.) is a tasty option throughout the day.

Steinheil 16

The best and largest pork escalopes in town! This cozy, laid-back restaurant with its young clientele is in the heart of Maxvorstadt. It offers changing daily specials, but almost everyone orders the escalope. It is so big that the fried potatoes or French fries usually have to find a spot under the meat. Augustiner beer is served. Note: Make sure you are hungry and book a table before you come!

Tip: Schnitzel Wiener Art (Viennese-type escalope) with fried potatoes. If you don’t manage all of it, just take home what’s left!

Old, colorfully painted ship containers offer an innovative location with a bar, a café, studios and plenty of interesting projects with creative minds in the new Werksviertel. Particularly beautiful: the raised urban gardening beds with fresh ingredients for the container food.
