With Siemensstadt 2.0, Siemens AG is realizing its vision of new working and living environments on the historic Siemens site in Berlin Spandau. And because users’ needs will not fundamentally change, regardless of far-reaching technological advances, Siemensstadt 2.0 aims to create a future-oriented urban quarter that puts people first. Stefan Kögl, General Manager Siemensstadt 2.0, Siemens Real Estate, explains how:
Siemensstadt 2.0 is currently still in ‘Phase 0,’ which means that although detailed objectives have been established and strategies have been developed, no specific designs have yet been drawn up. What is already certain, however, is that Siemensstadt 2.0 will still be home to industrial production and that the site’S ultra-modern manufacturing and production facilities will be seamlessly integrated into the quarter as a whole.
Three types of use come together: Factory, office, living
Siemensstadt 2.0 will combine three types of use on one site: industrial production, offices and workspaces, and living. These three are not just integral to Siemensstadt 2.0, but also to the future of urban living. After all, we are already seeing the real and virtual worlds merge and interlink. And it is these developments that are determining the key questions that are set to shape our future living spaces:
- As the way we live evolves, connectivity increases and the lines between real and virtual worlds blur, what infrastructure will we need?
- As technological innovation reshapes urban lifestyles and residents’ needs, what factors will have the greatest impact on urban development?
In industrial production, multi-layered networks are already standard and every small step is linked to an overall process. According to Stefan Kögl, the cities of the future will also need to adopt this approach if we are to satisfy the requirements of a networked society.
Siemensstadt 2.0: Where identity meets innovation
The 70-hectare site in Berlin-Siemensstadt is currently home to a self-contained and fenced-in complex that combines industrial production facilities with office workspaces. It is also a location with a long-standing sense of identity, a wealth of listed buildings, imposing halls and iconic architecture.
Right now, only 35% of the site is developed. Siemensstadt 2.0 will more than double the amount of usable floor space here, from 480,000 square meters today to around 1,000,000 square meters upon completion. As the development proceeds, the fence will be moved, giving way to an increasingly open and vibrant district. The aim of Siemensstadt 2.0 is to transform the site’s building stock into sustainable buildings and to create new environments for working, living, industrial production and culture.
Siemensstadt 2.0: Solutions for a wide range of challenges
Siemensstadt 2.0 is not only creating new working and living environments, it is also developing solutions for cities of the future everywhere: intelligent infrastructure, fully-integrated mobility, decentralized energy systems, smart factories for Industry 4.0, climate neutrality and sustainably sourced building materials.
Siemensstadt 2.0 is one of the 11 sites in Berlin that are being promoted as ‘Zukunftsorte’ (English: Future Locations). The project is jointly managed by the Berlin Senate, local authorities in the district of Spandau and Siemens Real Estate.
