How will the city of the future look like? INTELLIGENT URBANIZATION FORUM 2016

Urbanization is an unstoppalbe trend. And it´s gaining pace in a dramatic way. By 2050 it´s predicted that two-thirds of the world´s population will be living in cities. This poses all sorts of questions: What will life be like for us all in these urban areas? What are the challenges to urban planning? How will it impact on the economy and the environment?

For the fourth year in a row, we took a closer look at these questions and more at a huge special exhibit at the Intelligent Urbanization Forum at EXPO REAL 2016. Two exhibitions, each featuring talks, round table discussions, and guided tours, put the spotlight on the wide-ranging issues involved in promoting sustainable and smart urbanization.

The cities of Berlin and Barcelona each present their approaches and strategies for urbanization and urban planning, and showcase their very own Smart City projects:

Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic

Tegel Airport is closing, but it will remain an object of fascination. A research and industrial park dedicated to urban technologies is rising in its place: Berlin TXL – the Urban Tech Republic, and a new residential quarter: the Schumacher Quarter.

The state of Berlin has commissioned Tegel Projekt GmbH with developing and realizing these projects on the former airport site. Valuable space that Berlin desperately needs for the people who want to live and work in Berlin. Berlin is growing. As are many other cities around the world. Soon, more than 70% of the world’s population will live on just 3% of the earth’s surface. The future of these cities is the main topic of the future development of Berlin TXL, which will have around 1,000 companies with approximately 17,500 employees as well as 5,000 students researching, developing, and creating the future of cities.

Barcelona: Campus Diagonal-Besòs

The Campus Diagonal-Besòs for 3,500 students and 500 researchers in green engineering gives unique investment opportunities. The surface covers an area of 148,266 sqm of building land above ground level in the north area of Barcelona, allowing social and urban development. The built area will host thirteen buildings, eight of which are for the use of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) – BarcelonaTech and the other five will be for a student residence, institutions and R&D related companies. Construction work is completed on three buildings. In September 2016, 3,500 students and 500 researchers started their activities. Barcelona KEY, being part of this campus, offers a unique possibility to develop an urban space of 53.000 sqm committed to R&D in a quality urban space on the Barcelona metropolitan waterfront. The project is presented in the context of 22@ innovation district, Barcelona and its metropolitan area.

The completion of the first phase of the Campus Diagonal-Besòs gives unique opportunities: The urban development not only allows to use innovative technologies, but integrates higher education, social development and investment opportunities at the same time. The project enriches Barcelona’s urban model and is completely integrated in the Besòs Area, the 22@ innovation district and the metropolitan area.
